The More Things Change the More They Remain the Same

I am about to turn 62 and like all of us I have seen some changes in the world and yet I can't help but believe the old saying, "The more things change, the more they remain the same," still rings true.

I wrote about Obama in 2008 for a local east end publication, and then revisited the issue with the following post a few years later; (http://patch.com/new-york/southampton/bp--a-look-back-of-the-obama-inaugural) , my point being so many thought real change was at hand when Obama won, Now 7 years later, what really has changed, a lot? Yet wages for most are stagnate. Home prices are flat, but not plunging, Wall Street is booming but it seems only for the Hedge Fund Billionaires. Finally many are beginning to realise gas prices really are a game played by multi national oil companies to make money or crush opposition, (perhaps now Mr. Putin.)

Meanwhile as I age, I see things that will never change, such as people's love for the beaches, fireworks, BBQ in the evening, fire in fire places in the winters, and the love we feel for our special ones. Are things getting better or are they getting worse? I say it depends on how you look at it. For example being older I have less life left then I did 20 years ago, but I believe I am enjoying it more now. Then you might say i am no longer employed, ouch! Yet I am doing more things I want to now. The strangest part of all this is that too often I hear my deceased parents words coming out of my mouth, and the same things I said coming out of my grown children's mouth.

Lastly I just want to remind the readers here, this is our lives and our time.My feeling is sometimes everyone made changes in the hope that things could remain the same if we were happy, or mage changes so that we could get to a zone where we could be happy. Aristotle in his teachings about "happiness," perhaps had it right. All i can say about aging, the older I get the harder it is for me move about, so that hasn't remained the same.
